Black Widow Slots REVIEW
Explore one of the darker themes within the slots scene and spin to win when you play IGT’s Black Widow, the five-reel, 40 payline game based on a film from the 1980s.
Brush aside your arachnophobia because this particular game is less about the eight-legged creatures and more about the murderous female character from the film that this slot is based on. Play Black Widow today and claim your free spins for the chance to land winning combinations and receive huge cash sums!
Even if you’re not familiar with the film itself, the symbols and lack of spiders will perhaps give away the general theme. Bar the cobwebs, Black Widow focuses on the scheming female character from the film, while the symbols are various characters.
The typical playing card symbols, 10, J, Q, K and A make up those of lower value. The higher value symbols are the Black Widow herself, plus three male victims. Each of the symbols are well-drawn and given their own gothic twist.
Aside from the symbols, the background and space around the reels have also been designed with the theme in mind; cobwebs fill two corners while a dated gold frame contains the reels. All of this is visible over the top of what appears to be quite old wallpaper.
The feel of Black Widow is generally one similar to horror films, which we guess is quite appropriate seeing as this slot is based on one.
How To Play
Before you play Black Widow for the chance to spin and win, you’ll need to establish the stake you’re going to play with for each spin.
Because all forty paylines are fixed, the only variable that you’ll have to decide on is the ‘Line Bet’, or coin size as it’s otherwise known. You can change the line bet by using the + and - buttons at the bottom of the screen.
Your total stake for each spin will be the result of your line bet multiplied by 40 paylines. So, if you’re wagering with a £1 line bet, your total stake per spin will be £40. It’s that simple.
You can then begin the game by clicking the central ‘Spin’ button beneath the reels, setting them off once spin at a time. Unfortunately for players wanting to give their finger the occasional rest, there’s no autoplay feature, meaning you will need to click manually each time to set the reels off.
How To Win
When playing Black Widow, you’ll need to land combinations of at least three or more symbols in order to receive a cash payout. As mentioned, the playing card symbols hold the least value, so combinations of them will result in lower payouts than if you were to land different symbols.
The standard symbol with the highest value is of course the Black Widow herself, paying out a cool 50x your coin size if you land five across an active payline.
You can also secure a winning payout with the help of non-standard symbols, such as the Black Widow slot logo. The Black Widow logo is the game’s wild symbol and will substitute for all others, except the green poison symbol, in order to create winning combinations.
Plus, the wild symbol can in fact create combinations on its own and will reward the highest payouts in doing so. For five Black Widow wild symbols across an active payline, you’ll receive 1000x your coin size in return.
The green poison symbol can also help you win some great prizes, but through the additional bonus round when triggered!
Free Spins - You can trigger the free spins round by landing the green poison symbol anywhere on reels two, three and four. You’ll then be awarded seven free spins. During the Free Spins Bonus round, landing the bonus symbol in all positions on reels two, three and four will award an extra free spins and this can continue up to a maximum of 98 spins.
Web Capture Feature - If you land one of the male symbols in the centre position on reel three, you’ll receive a payout of either 2.00 or 1.20, depending on which symbol it is that you land there. After each male symbol is captured in this position, the value on the respective meter will increase, up to 13 times on each meter, per bonus. Meter values range between 2 to 1000 times the total bet from the triggering game.
If you manage to land the Black Widow herself in the centre position on reel 3, you’ll be paid the total value of the three meters for that spin, also increasing the value on each of them, up to a maximum of 13 increases per meter, per bonus.
What We Say
Based on the Debra Winger film from the 80s, Black Widow sees you grappling with the criminal of the title, a devious murderess who marries countless rich men, only to kill them and pocket their money. The movie may be relatively obscure, but the plot is rich territory for a slot game and IGT have squeezed out every plot device to make this as intriguing as possible.
Perhaps the most memorable feature is the Web Capture Feature. This consists of the middle square on the grid. Should male characters appear there, you'll pluck them away and harvest them for big rewards. Each time a man is caught, their Multiplier Meter increases, giving you better and better proceeds. The Black Widow herself will sometimes be ensnared in the trap, yielding the best prizes of all.
That isn't all there is to this inventive slot, though, and the Free Spins Round is also well paced. And while it starts out with just seven free spins, retriggering allows you to push these up to 98!
Black Widow is smart, clever, and fun to play. Even if you're not familiar with the film, the game mechanics make it a fascinating choice.
