The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) is one of the regulatory bodies responsible for safer gambling in the UK. It represents over 90% of retail betting shops, online betting and gaming operators, casinos, and bingo operators.

Last month, BGC published a report that shows the importance of the gambling industry to the UK economy. According to the Council, the gambling industry stands with £7.7 bn in gross value and supports nearly 120,000 job positions, being one of the economy’s driving forces.

Since 2017, BGC is running the Safer Gambling Week Campaign in order to achieve higher standards in the betting and gaming industry. Now, the Council has announced the dates for Safer Gambling Week 2021, which will run between 1-7 November.

Industry Associations support the Campaign

In the middle of the 2005 UK Gambling Act Review, the UK regulatory bodies decided to work together and conduct another Safer Gambling Week. The Betting and Gaming Council is leading the event and it announced the dates for this year’s campaign. Namely, the Safer Gambling Week 2021 will take place from November 1 to November 7.

The annual campaign has been running since 2017. It has seen the BGC collaborate on different initiatives in order to deliver and maintain responsible gambling. Many industry associations came together to support the campaign, including the British Amusement Catering Trade Association (Bacta) and the Bingo Association.

Despite the challenges, the Safer Gambling Week 2020 was a very successful campaign, which is the reason why experts have huge expectations for this year’s event. During the Safer Gambling Week of last year, the number of social media impressions hit 19 million, an increase of 19% on the previous year.

Furthermore, the number of sessions on the Safer Gambling Week website was also 18% higher in 2020 compared to the year before that. Plus, operators reported an increase in the number of customers using safer gambling tools such as setting deposit limits and self-exclusion.

Raise awareness in the gambling industry

The Safer Gambling Week was founded as a result of different gaming associations wanting to raise awareness in the gambling industry. They wanted to spread the word about responsible gambling among the staff in the industry, the consumers, and those who are close to individuals involved in gambling.

Even if the licenced gambling operators are using different tools to inform their customers about responsible gambling, the Safer Gambling Week 2021 aims to include even more organizations and businesses in these discussions.

Michael Dugher, CEO of the BGC, expressed the Council’s aim to work with other associations and reach a higher audience. He expects that the Safer Gambling Week 2021 will be even better than last week’s campaign since the betting shops and casinos are now open. Moreover, he added that we’ve seen many safer gambling measures in the past year, so the Safer Gambling Week is a great opportunity to highlight the fantastic work.

The full list of organisers and participants of the Safer Gambling Week 2021 will be further announced. You can read more details about the event, or become part of it, at the official website of the Safer Gambling UK.
