Last week we discussed the situation in the UK and the industry statistics that were published by the UK Gambling Commission, this time we are going to have a look at the situation on the other side of the pond, in the US. The big news is that sports betting has now been legalised in Illinois and that Chicago will get its first casino. There are currently ten casinos in the state in total, but the new bill will permit the establishment of six more.

At the same time, states in the South are also pushing gambling legalisation forward, at least when it comes to certain forms of gambling. Namely, Alabama is set to legalise daily fantasy sports. Some consider this activity to be different from sports betting, but it involves placing wagers and sports events, so it is, in a way, a form of sports betting.

New Hampshire is another state where gambling related acts are being pushed forward. A version of a bill set to legalise sports betting in this New England state has been amended by the Senate and is now back in front of the House. If this bill (HB480), New Hampshire will become the next state to legalise sports betting.

Sports Betting And Chicago Casinos Approved Yesterday

The Illinois State Senate, which is controlled by the Democrats passed legislation that allows sports betting within this state and permits the establishment of gambling facilities, i.e. casinos in the city of Chicago. The goal of the bill is to raise tax funds for one of the largest infrastructure projects in the history of Illinois. Of course, gambling tax will not be the only source of income for the project, but it will provide a major boost.

US states are beginning to realise that it is better to legalise and regulate gambling, because that entails the collection of additional tax funds, then to have it remain illegal, as citizens would keep on gambling nevertheless, with the only difference being the fact that the state will not be collecting any funds.

Governor Pritzker said that he is looking forward to gambling legalisation, indicating that he will sign the bill as soon as possible. Pritzker added that both parties worked together to get the infrastructure project passed and the budget bill.

At the moment, sports betting is legal in eight states, but four more states have already legalised it since the beginning of this year. In addition to collecting funds in gambling tax, Illinois is also looking to collect more funds from vehicle fuel tax, parking, cigarettes and more.

Senate Finance Committee in New Hampshire Returns Amended Bill To House

New Hampshire is on its way to legalise sports betting and the Finance Committee amended the bill and returned it to the House of Representatives. The number of mobile operators will be limited to five. The Lottery Commission of New Hampshire will be allowed to choose the state’s sports betting operators, as long as they pick the operators that will provide as much revenue as possible.

When it comes to mobile wagers, punters will only be permitted to place bets if they are situated in New Hampshire at the moment of placing the wager. If the bill is passed and everything goes according to plan, the first bet will be placed on the First of July 2020.
