The regulatory and legal sides of the gambling industry continue to be the most newsworthy aspect and there have been some big novelties lately. For example, we informed you about the additional rules implemented by the UKGC, but there was also the high debated implementation of affordability checks.
Now, several new things have arisen, especially with the government’s white paper on gambling reform, which is expected for this month. A public health body also recommended new gambling rules.
New regulations related to gambling products
These recommendations were introduced by the UK association of directors of public health (ADPH) and are aimed at products that are deemed “high risk”. However, the definition of these products was not exactly clarified.
According to the ADPH, these modifications of the gambling law should “include the prevention of clustering of gambling outlets in vulnerable communities alongside consideration of clustering with other forms of outlets/services with potential negative health impacts, and the banning of high-risk gambling products.”
The ADPH aims to tackle gambling-related harm with a so-called “public health approach”. This is a strategy that “priorities the public’s health, and that is based on core values and principles, such as human rights, equity, and collective responsibility.”
All of this is based on empirical evidence provided by Public Health England, which shows that gambling harm further highlights the social and economic inequalities in the country. According to these findings, people are both directly and indirectly affected. In fact, 7% of the population is negatively affected by gambling, which translates to about 5 million people (1 in 12).
Australian government blocks major website
The Australian Communication and Media Authority (ACMA) recently blocked one of the biggest and most popular gambling sites called thepokies.net. The Authority found that the site was visited by around 30,000 players every month and it offered casino-style games that are not allowed in that jurisdiction.
There were many complaints by players who lost big sums or didn’t receive their winnings. The AMCA stated that they “have received more complaints about thepokies.net this year than any other illegal gambling website, and it is clearly doing a lot of harm to the Australian community”. On top of that, it urged people to be careful because “If one of these sites decides to keep your money, and we know that happens quite regularly, there is nothing you can do about it.”
