The Gambling industry in the UK has been subject to numerous regulatory changes, especially in the past several months. Authorities have been doing much to ensure that the gambling scene remains safe and regulated. This reason, combined with the increase in problem gamblers, was the introduction of numerous new rules and regulations.

However, these novelties do not include only regulatory changes, as certain modifications in staff are also in the mix. One of the most recent ones includes the new Secretary of State for the DCMS.

Government appoints new Secretary of State for DCMS

With the appointment of Liz Truss as the new Prime Minister, other changes in Cabinet soon followed. One was the Secretary of State for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport.

Previously, during Boris Johnson’s time as Primer Minister, Nadine Dorries held this position. After her recent decision to step down, Michelle Donelan stepped into this role. Before taking on this position, Donelan briefly acted as the Secretary of State for Education.

With this new role, Michelle Donelan will have many new responsibilities to take care of and many areas to oversee. The DCMS cover a wide array of departments, including the gambling sphere.

One of the biggest challenges in recent times was the White Paper on Gambling reform, which is highly anticipated and crucially needed at this point. However, various reasons have caused its delay, but a recent announcement revealed that the White Paper is expected “in the coming weeks.”

Betting and Gambling Council pleased with the choice

After Donelan was appointed, BGC expressed their satisfaction with the choice, saying that this was well-deserved. Moreover, it congratulated the new Secretary of State, prompting her to keep the industry safe, balanced, and regulated while emphasising BGC’s commitment to the Gambling Review.

The CEO of BGC, Michael Dugher, stated: “On behalf of the 119,000 people whose jobs are supported by our members – from the high street to hospitality, from tourism to tech – I’d like to congratulate Michelle Donelan on her new role as Secretary of State for DCMS.”

He continued: “We have been working extremely closely with the DCMS over many years to help the Government find the right balance in the Gambling Review so that we continue to drive big changes and higher standards on safer gambling to better protect the most vulnerable.”
