What does an RNG do?

There are many questions asked by the new slots players that actually make you wonder whether you know how that functions. One of them is What does an RNG doand how does it affect your gameplay. In this article, we will explain everything about RNG and why it’s an important figure in the online slots gambling.

What does an RNG do?

Basically, the RNG is the brains of the slot machine, and it’s an abbreviation for Random Number Generator. Many slot players already know that there is a chip in the computer that randomly selects the numbers, but almost no player knows how it basically work, and that’s where a lot of the misconceptions and myths about the slot machines come from. One of the most common mistakes that the slot players think it’s a thing is that the slot machines have a cycle that can let a player know when it’s due to land a winning combination. This is due to some of the slots salesman and may unauthorised sites that sell stories and sell the system. Let me tell you from the start – it’s not true, so save your money if you think slots work that way.

How Does RNG Work

There is a microprocessor similar to the one in the lap tops and personal computers that we have in every home, but instead of running all the programs that you usually do like word, excel or some other computer game, it runs a special program called RNG which generates numbers to correspond to what we are seeing as the symbols of the slot machine.

As we already said, some people may think that there is a circle or a pattern that is followed by the machine, but the truth is that there is a perpetual motion. The only thing that the machine needs to work is electricity, obviously, and it will produce random numbers every millisecond. The value which these machines can reach are approximately from – go 4 billion which is later translated into the symbols of the reels and the outcome of the slot game is determined by the outcome of the RNG. The RNG actually doesn’t work unless you insert a coin and hit the spin button.

There is a formula known as the algorithm that’s being followed by the Random Number Generator where series of instructions determine the generated numbers. The background of all this is way beyond all of the mathematical knowledge that we’ve acquired in our lives. However, the accuracy of the formula can be checked and that’s done by the Casino Control Board and some testing laboratories which actually do it to every slot that goes out into the online gambling market.

The RNG Principles

Although this is not how the RNG works, here is a principle that will explain you the whole process and how the Random Number Generator works.

Reel Type Slots Machines

There are several types of slot machines, and one of them is the reel type slot machine. These types of machines have a number of spaces on each reel that contains a symbol or in rare occasions its empty. They are called physical stops and all the mechanical machines have around 20 to 22 of them. On the other hand, the video slots can hold way more “virtual stops” which we will speak a bit later.

Es an example, let’s make things simple and say there are 10 stops on each reel. With 10 stops there are 1,000 different combinations which we can see by the formula (10 x 10 x 10 = 1000!).

The 1000 combinations are known as a cycle, and that’s what confuses most of the players thinking that the whole pattern has a cycle, which is not the case.

The odds of the same three numbers (which we see as symbols) landing again is 1 to 1000 so theoretically if you play 1000 spins you should see each number once. But we all know that this is not he case. If you played a million spins you would see that the numbers would even out to be closer to the actual probability. This is similar to flipping a coin 100 times. Although the odds are 50 -50 you are unlikely to see 50 heads and 50 tails after 100 spins.

The Daily Pick 3 Lottery

We have all seen the Daily Pick 3 Lottery and know the drawing. There are three glass bowls with numbers from 0 – 9 the balls are mixed and when the top is lifted one ball exits the bowls and shows its number. This is repeated with the rest two bows, giving you a three digit number at the end.

To make this simple, let’s replace the numbers with one jackpot, two wilds, three bells and four empty symbols.

After 1,000 draws, the results are the next:

3 Jackpot 1 (1x1x1), 3 Wilds 8 (2x2x2), 3 Bells 27 (3x3x3) with a total number of wins of 37. There are overall 963 losing combinations.

The RNG picks these combinations of numbers thousands of times each second. Let’s try this example with three light bulbs where electricity passes through the bolts with a fast tempo and when you hit a button it stops and one of the bulbs lights up. In this example, the light represents the three digit number just picked by the RNG. If by any reason you hit the button one second earlier or later, there will be a different result. This is the same as standing up from a slot machine and someone else replacing you and winning the jackpot. It’s not that you didn’t have the combination in one millisecond on your machine, your timing was incorrect.

Hope this answered your question what does an RNG do,and makes you understand the game of slots a bit deeper.
