What Does RTP Mean?

You have no doubt come across RTP percentages many times when browsing through online slots. If you still don’t quite know what this is all about – keep reading! We will explain what does RTP mean and all the basics you need to know.

Return to Player (RTP) – Definition

Return to Player (RTP) is basically the percentage of all the wagered money a slot or casino game will pay back to players over time.

The higher the RTP, the more often a player will win in the long run. Usually, the numbers are close, but below 100. At 100%, the chances of a player winning are equal to that of the casino. If the RTP climbs above 100%, it means that the casino actually lost money to its customers on that game over some time period.

Here’s an example: If you make a hundred £1 bets on a game with 95% RTP, you might expect to get back about £95 in wins. Keep in mind that the RTP is generally calculated over the long term, while almost anything can happen in the short term.

RTP is the opposite of the other important casino term, “House Advantage”. While RTP displays a player’s potential winnings, House Advantage displays the opposite – the advantage to the casino.

How the RTP Is Calculated

The formula to calculate the RTP for a casino game is simple - the total amount returned to players divided by the total amount bet by players.

The amount returned to players is the net amount won by a player in a round, whilst the total amount bet by players is the sum of each initial bet per round per player for the audited period for a specific game.

Where to Find the Return to Player Value

Under UK law maintained by the Gambling Commission, all gaming machines must clearly display the return to player (RTP) proportion as a percentage or the odds of winning a payout. The payouts and prizes on offer depend on the category of gaming machine. The regulations also state that gaming machines must display whether they are ‘compensated’ or ‘random’ alongside the percentage RTP figure.

It’s quite easy to find the RTP for any slot or game offered by an online casino. Some are easier to find than others, but the majority of them can be found by viewing the help section for the game.

Hit Frequency

This is another term used by casinos which describes how often a machine will stop on a winning combination. For example, if a machine has a hit frequency of 8%, it means that the machine will stop on a winning combination about 8% of the time.

There can be great variation in the hit frequency. Some slots have a hit frequency as low as 3%, while other games, such as video poker, have a hit frequency of almost 45%. The video poker hit frequency might sound very appealing, but keep in mind that in almost half of those “hits,” the player just wins back his original bet. On the other hand, a machine with a 3% hit frequency may actually offer players a chance to win a very large jackpot.

Remember, “hit frequency” is how often (on average) a winning combination will come up. “Return to player” is how much or what percentage of all money wagered will be returned over time.

Online Slots With Highest RTP

Now that you’ve figured out what does RTP mean, you’ll probably be looking for games that have a solid RTP percentage. So, let’s have a look at the games which have the best odds.

Blood Suckers

With an RTP of 98%, this older NetEnt game is one of the slot titles with highest return rates. The game features the most famous vampire in history – Count Dracula. This game was produced by NetEnt and features five reels and 25 paylines. The reels are dark and they exude gothic atmosphere with some eerie sounds, as well as theme-related symbols.

Kings Of Chicago

Kings of Chicago is another NetEnt title with a high RTP – 97.80%. This game is quite impressive as all symbols are cards and the winning combinations match poker winning combinations. You can get Four of a Kind, Full House, Royal Flush and all the other combinations.

Monopoly Big Event

This game comes with a fluctuating RTP. The return rate in Monopoly Big Event can go up to 99%, but only if you wager big. Monopoly Big Event also offers a lot of exciting features and multipliers which can lead to a win that’s 1,000 or even 2,000 times your wager.

Goblin’s Cave

This classic Playtech slot is all around gold and coins. The goblin is working hard to dig up some fortune just for you, but you're in control of what he brings up. With three paylines and a hold feature, this slot gives players the power to choose, but what makes Goblin’s Cave worth your attention is the stunning 99.30% RTP.

Ugga Bugga

This slot has an African Tribal concept. Keeping it classic, the game doesn’t have many bonus features. In particular, it has a wild substituting symbol and a multi spin feature, but it does come with a 99.10% RTP.

Slots are the most widely spread and popular casino games of chance and they have various paylines, themes and bonus features. They are designed to attract many casino players looking for a hot and generous slots action. However, how generous a slot is depends on its return to player percentage which ranges from one slot to another.

When RTP is in question, it’s important to understand that ultimately, they are subject to chance thanks to Random Number Generators that make sure the results are always random and fair. Every single spin on a slot machine is independent and means that even if you’ve just hit a jackpot, you could still get another big hit on the next spin. Thanks to RNGs, your chances of winning are exactly the same every time you play.

Keep your knowledge of what does RTP mean next time you choose what to play, and maybe it’ll make some difference!
