The classic French wheel of fortune has its American version. Find out the small yet crucial difference in the American version of Roulette.

Intro to American Roulette

Roulette is one of the most popular games of chance in the world. It has been made even more popular and brought into the awareness of just about any person in the world thanks to the Hollywood movies where many scenes cut in or zoom out with the spinning of roulette. The game named after the French world for little wheel comes with few modes of play. Choose where to place your chips - whether on a specific number, a group of numbers, odd or even or red or black.

When the game of your choice is either/or Roulette is pretty much a game of chance that has different odds depending on the type of game you play. The 0 and the added 00 field in the American version have resulted in slightly different odds between the two versions of the game. Placing a bet on the 0 in the French version comes with odds of 36 to 1 and placing the same bet on the American version comes with 37 to 1. The same is true both for the 0 and 00 slots on the wheel.

The Few Differences

The difference between the European and the American versions of Roulette is in the number of the fields. European/French roulette has 37 fields and the American game has 38, which includes the numbers from 1 to 36, and includes the fields 0 and 00. These two slots are the 'house pockets' which give the only advantage to the casino. The 0 slot had been part of the initial version of roulette, whereas the 00 was introduced in the American version of the game, giving another slot reserved for the bank.

Worth noting is that when the Roulette began to flourish in the early 20th century, the American style of the game was featured in the 'New World' countries, including South America and the Caribbean. Today both versions of the game are found in Europe, although the United States has retained the American style only. Conversely, the online casinos feature all versions of the Roulette.

American Roulette Rules

The rules of American Roulette are straightforward and simple and nearly indistinguishable from its European counterpart. The table  can be dotted with chips of different color, so as not to confuse the bets that have been made by the different players at the table. The bets can be placed on a single slot or several slots. Bets can be placed on numbers only or just on the red or black or odd or even slots. The wheel being in motion does not mean that the action stops. The players can add more chips on their slot or even place a fresh stack of chips on another slot, in the heat of the action. All bets need to cease once the dealer as called out No More Bets. This is when everyone is awaiting for the ball to expand its inertia and to finally land on a slot.

Type of Bets

There are several types of bets that can be made on a game of Roulette and we will go over all of them.

The table of American roulette has individual numbers and group bets. This clearly divides between the types of the bet that can be made. Each bet then, can be placed either inside or outside, which is the inner and the outer ring on the betting table.

Inside Bets

Split Bet or Cheval

In French Roulette, this bet is made on any two numbers that are adjacent on the inside of the table's arrangement.

Straight Up Bet

This bet is placed on any given number on the wheel, including 0 and 00.

Street Bet

This one is made on rows of numbers and covers three numbers. One example would be 1,2,3 or 22,23,24.

Five Bet

This bet covers the fields from 0 to 3, hence the name. This means, the chip is placed on 0,00,1,2 and 3.

Corner Bet

The corner bet is placed on the dot that joins any four numbers on the bet table. An example would be placing a chip on the dot that joins 7,8,10 and 11.

Line Bet

The line bet, on the other hand, is placed on the edge of the line that joins two rows of numbers. One example would be the rows that start with the numbers 13 and 16.

Outside Bets

Column Bet

This bet covers an entire column and the bet is placed on the 2:1 field.

Bet on Colour

This is the simplest of all bets. Black or Red, to include all numbers, with a payout of 1 to 1.

Dozen Bet

Dozen bets can be placed on any one of the outside fields that group the number slots in dozens. There are three of these groupings: 1st 12, 2nd 12 and 3rd 12.

Odd Even

This is as simple as it sounds, with payout of 1 to 1.

Low/High

Low/high bet is placed on one of the two fields that are at the opposite corners on the bottom of the bet table. The choice would be either the 1 to 18 field or the 19 to 36.

Another Consideration

If you place your bet on any of these options and the ball lands on 0 or 00, the bet will be split between the players and the house. So, half of your bet goes to the house and the other half back to your chips.
