About Rock Bottom Slot

Rock Bottom slot plays on a grid of 5 reels and a 3-4-4-4-3 row setup. There are 576 paylines. The minimum bet that can be placed is £0.20 while the maximum bet is £100. In order to win, you have to connect 3 matching symbols across a payline, starting with the leftmost reel.

There are a number of bonus features such as the Headshrinker Spins Feature and the Insanity Spins Feature. We will discuss these features in more detail in the gameplay section below.

Design, Symbols, and Graphics

The theme of the Rock Bottom slot is the 5 stages of grief. It is a heavy theme and the visuals also reflect that. The theme is best described as being inspired by a gritty crime film. The background, and in fact everything apart from some of the symbols, are a monochrome grey. The music also reflects the mood with a heavy guitar track playing.

In terms of symbols, they are divided into low pay and high pay. The low-pay symbols are the card royals (10, J, Q, K, A) which pay up to a maximum between 1.10x to 1.50x the bet amount.

The high-pay symbols are the character symbols. These character symbols display the 5 stages of grief and they are Anger, Denial, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. They pay up to a maximum between 2.50x to 7.50x the bet amount. There are two special symbols and they are the Scatter/Wild and the xSplit Symbols.

All in all, I understand what NoLimit City was trying to capture with the theme, but for me, it’s a bit too heavy for a slot game. The lack of popping colours is not a staple in many slot games, and maybe this is the reason why. Put simply, the theme doesn’t seem to fit what a slot game should be.

RTP, Variance and Payouts for Rock Bottom Slot

The RTP of the Rock Bottom slot is capped at 96.04% which is around the industry standard. In terms of volatility, it is considered high. This means that although rewards are scarce, they may bring bigger rewards when they land. The maximum payout may potentially reach up to 19,690x the stake.

You can learn more about these terms in detail in our Variance, Volatility and RTP guide here!

Gameplay and Features on Rock Bottom Slot

Rock Bottom slot has lots of features and mechanics. There are many unique features and I will give more detail about them here.

xSplit Feature

To trigger this feature, xSplit Symbols must land in the base game. These symbols may only appear on the middle reels and split symbols across that row, as well as the adjacent rows in reels 1 and 5. It can only split Character Symbols into smaller ones by 2, 4 and further to 8 units.

xSplit Symbols also split themselves upon landing and become 2 Wilds. xSplit Symbols cannot split Wilds, low-paying symbols, and other xSplit Symbols other than themselves.

Headshrinker Spins Feature

To trigger the Headshrinker Spins Feature, either 3 or 4 Scatters must land. The number of respins is calculated by the number of rows the Scatters had to move down the grid to reach the bottom.

This is where the 5 stages theme comes into play. You begin at stage 1 (Anger), and you may advance through all of the stages. When in Headshrinker Spins Feature, reels 1 and 5 are not played. When a corresponding character symbol to the stage lands, it expands to fill the entire reel.

Character Symbols associated with other stages get a multiplier if they land during another stage. To advance to a different stage, 5 Scatters must land. Each Scatter also awards 1 respin, and when advancing to a different stage they grant 2 respins.
The Headshrinkers Spins Feature ends when you reach the final stage or when you run out of respins.

Insanity Spins Feature

To trigger Insanity Spins, you must land 5 Scatters. It works much the same as Headshrinker Spins Feature.
In that, reels 1 and 5 don’t play, you begin at stage 1, and corresponding character symbols fill the entire reel. But, when they fill the entire reel, they become Wild and form winning combinations, even with Character Symbols that do not correspond with the stage.

When they form these winning combinations, it adds their multipliers to the win at the end of the feature. You need 5 Scatter/Wilds to land to progress to another stage. You are granted 1 respin for every Scatter/Wild that lands, and 2 when reaching another stage. To reach another stage, you must collect 5 Scatter/Wild Symbols.

This feature ends when the final stage is reached or when you run out of respins.

xCap Downfall Feature

When your winnings exceed 1969x the stake, you will trigger the xCap Downfall Feature. When triggered, you have to reveal a random multiplier (2x, 3x, 5x, 7x and 10x).

The multiplier revealed then applies to the 1969x the bet amount and can potentially reach up to a maximum of 19690x the stake if the 10x multiplier is revealed. The feature ends when a multiplier is revealed.

Nolimit City is known for delivering gritty-themed slots. If you found the Rock Bottom slot to your liking, then I would recommend also checking out their Serial slot, Folsom Prison slot and Karen Maneater slot.

Our Verdict

In my opinion, the Rock Bottom slot fails to deliver an enjoyable experience. It comes down to both a combination of the visuals and the overly complicated game mechanics. Although it is a good effort on Nolimit City’s part there is still some work left to be done. The bonus mechanics are interesting and, hopefully, they will be implemented in other releases.
